Healthcare concerns arise at Karelia Brigade in Kouvola as 300 soldiers seek medical attention

Health issues among conscripts at the Karelia Brigade in Kouvola have prompted concern as approximately 300 soldiers sought medical attention this week due to flu-like symptoms. Lieutenant Colonel Mikko Saarelainen, the head of the brigade, reported that most cases are associated with respiratory infections, particularly adenoviruses, which have been spreading notably in military facilities since mid-August.

The Karelia Brigade, Finland’s largest military garrison, currently hosts around 2,500 conscripts. Three soldiers shared with Yle their dissatisfaction with the quality of healthcare and living conditions, noting that they have experienced high fever symptoms, with one soldier suffering for six days, four of those with a fever exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Criticism has been directed at the slow responses from medical staff. Soldiers said it took several days for the health center to contact them after reporting illness, which is a stark increase from previous experiences where calls were typically received the next day. Saarelainen confirmed that, during peak times, assessing the need for care can take two to three days due to overwhelmed staff and a surge in sick reports.

Currently, about 600 conscripts are ill each week, leading to isolation protocols. Soldiers have reported that designated isolation rooms are often full. Some expressed distress over being too ill to leave their rooms for meals, raising concerns about adequate care.

In response to travel-related health concerns, Saarelainen mentioned a new policy allowing soldiers uncertain about their condition to contact the brigade to potentially forgo travel if necessary. This has been received positively as a step toward improving soldier welfare.
