Many consumers are facing issues with their smart TVs, just a few years after their purchase, raising concerns that investments of several hundred or even thousands of euros may be wasted. The problem often lies with domestic streaming services such as Yle Areena, MTV Katsomo, and Nelonen Ruutu, whose applications cease functioning. In August 2023, even Netflix stopped working on older TV models.

If a TV otherwise functions well, there are ways to rectify the situation without needing to invest in a new television. Users can restore smart features by obtaining an external device, which allows the apps to operate again.

Customers are increasingly aware of these external devices and their ability to extend the lifespan of older televisions. According to Riku Rieppola, a store manager, many would rather purchase an external device than a new TV. He notes a shift towards sustainability, with customers reluctant to discard an otherwise functional TV just because a specific app is no longer operational.

Several manufacturers offer various options, with well-known choices including Google Chromecast and Apple TV. TV operators are also providing digital box solutions.

Smart TVs sold as “smart” are not as advanced compared to modern televisions, as many applications no longer work when the TV’s software or performance is outdated. Most domestic apps have ceased functioning on TVs less than ten years old, primarily due to manufacturers ending support for old models. Issues like security and device performance often drive companies to discontinue support.

Streaming has become a common method to watch movies and shows, yet users can still connect their televisions to computers via HDMI to access applications without an additional device. This allows the TV to function as a larger computer monitor.
