The Faroe Islands fishing vessels are currently in British waters, west of Shetland, attempting to catch mackerel. However, the conditions in the area are currently so poor that the ships are unable to fish.
The Faroe Islands have a quota of 31,054 tons of mackerel to fish this year in British waters, which constitutes 35 percent of their total allocation.
Typically, these vessels do not venture into British waters this early in the season. The fishing activity is deemed necessary according to the Faroese Fisheries Authority, which has granted permission for this trip to take place in Norwegian waters.
