Iceland’s parliament proposes government support for suicide prevention research initiative
All members of Iceland’s parliament, excluding ministers and the speaker, have proposed that the government support a research initiative led by Lífsbrú, the national suicide prevention center under the Directorate of Health. The proposal was introduced by Ingibjörg Ísaksen, the leader of the Progress Party in parliament, aimed at investigating the causes surrounding suicides and deaths from accidental poisonings.
The initiative has garnered broad support among parliamentarians, signifying a strong consensus on this important issue. It calls for the government to back a project initiated by a working group at Lífsbrú. The ultimate goal is to gather data that will aid in identifying at-risk groups for preventive efforts, as well as help shape interventions designed to prevent suicide attempts and deaths.
By improving the understanding of risk factors, the project aspires to establish more effective measures aimed at reducing the occurrence of suicides and suicide attempts in Iceland. The focus on data collection and analysis is expected to enhance strategic planning and public health initiatives in addressing mental health and well-being across the nation.
