Denmark shifts military focus to Pacific amid tensions with China

The future frontline for the Danish armed forces may extend to the other side of the world. Despite the ongoing war in Europe due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Denmark is beginning to focus its military efforts on the Pacific and the South China Sea.

To start, Denmark will send a staff officer to the U.S. Pacific Fleet headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii, for a three-year assignment under American command. This move signals Denmark’s intention to support U.S. military efforts in the Pacific, where China is expanding its influence and challenging American allies.

Carsten Bach, defense spokesperson for the Liberal Alliance, stated that Denmark currently provides a minimal contribution, emphasizing the need for a stronger presence in the region. Neighboring countries have already begun deploying units to support U.S. operations, and Denmark must prepare similarly due to its status as a significant maritime nation.

The Danish officer will report back home and eventually advise on how Denmark can assist in the U.S.-China tensions. While Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen acknowledged that there are no “current” plans to send military contributions to the Pacific, he emphasized the need to improve knowledge of regional dynamics.

As China builds artificial islands and conducts military exercises threatening Taiwan and the Philippines, Denmark’s involvement may become increasingly vital. Other European allies, including Germany and France, are also sending contributions to the Pacific Fleet, highlighting a collective effort to monitor China’s actions.

While Liberal Alliance is clear on supporting U.S. operations in the Pacific, the Socialist Party (SF) is more cautious, stating that Denmark currently lacks the capability for exercises or contributions due to issues with its naval fleet. Discussions are ongoing about future military planning, including the need for new frigates to ensure Denmark can participate effectively in international efforts across various regions.
