Hafnarfjörður councilor emphasizes need for clarity on Carbfix carbon injection plans

The municipality of Hafnarfjörður needs to ensure financial benefits from Carbfix’s activities, according to the local councilor leader of the Progressive Party. Valdimar Víðisson emphasized the necessity for clear communication with residents regarding the company’s plans for carbon dioxide injection. A residents’ meeting will be held to discuss this matter, contingent upon agreements between the municipality and Carbfix.

A large public meeting took place recently at Bæjarbíó in Hafnarfjörður, where Carbfix plans were presented, aiming to inject over three million tons of CO2 annually into the ground near Straumsvík. Many nature conservation groups and citizens have expressed concerns about potential environmental impacts, fearing that the project could lead to increased seismic activity.

Valdimar stated that the municipal council is approaching the issue with good intentions following the signing of a letter of intent. He noted that recent months have seen increased discussion about the project’s location and scope as residents become more informed. These developments have prompted various discussions on social media, reaching the elected representatives as well.
