The trial for the tragic case of infant murder in Vuosaari begins today, Tuesday, at the Helsinki District Court. A woman in her forties is accused of murdering her eight-month-old child, with the alleged crime occurring in Vuosaari between May and June. The proceedings will commence at 9 a.m., and Yle news will closely follow the developments.

According to police, the infant died from malnutrition and dehydration. The baby was discovered deceased on June 12 after the mother herself called emergency services. Prior to this, neighbors had observed the baby crying and had reported their concerns to the authorities.

Dr. Hanna Putkonen, head physician at the psychiatric prison hospital in Vantaa, previously informed Yle that infant murders are rare in Finland. In cases of infant murders, the perpetrator is most often the victim’s own mother.
