Sigfússon supports Left-Green Movement’s call for spring elections in Iceland

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, the former chairman of the Left-Green Movement in Iceland, has expressed support for the party’s recent resolution calling for the dissolution of the current government and elections in the spring. He described the resolution as honest and responsible, highlighting that the coalition government has achieved significant results in challenging matters.

During discussions at the party’s national convention, an early proposal to call for an immediate end to the government cooperation was set aside after participants agreed it was not the right approach, given important projects that the government must complete. Consequently, the decision was made to instead aim for elections in the spring. Sigfússon emphasized that the resolution is a truthful reflection of the party’s assessment of the situation.

He noted that the government has supported wage agreements aimed at reducing inflation and interest rates, alongside previous accomplishments in improving living standards. Despite concerns about polling numbers indicating a potential drop in support for the Left-Green Movement, Sigfússon voiced no fear of the party failing to secure seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections. He remarked on the vigorous nature of the recent convention and mentioned a noticeable return of former party members.

In response to current polling trends, Sigfússon stated, “I understand nothing about these surveys. The situation in Iceland is much better than these polls suggest when you look at the overall picture.”
