A significant leak in a district heating pipeline occurred on Myyrmäentie in Louhela, Vantaa, prompting emergency services to cordon off the area. The fire department received the alert around 8:30 AM on Sunday. Aleksi Savolainen, a fire chief from the Central Uusimaa fire department, informed Yle shortly before 8:30 that approximately 80-degree water was spilling onto the sidewalks and roadways due to the underground leak.

“The sidewalks have been isolated within a few hundred meters to prevent people from walking into the scalding water. Vantaan Energia is on-site and is currently shutting down the district heating line. It will take time to cut it at several locations,” Savolainen stated.

According to him, the incident has caused the district heating to be disrupted in several nearby residential buildings. Additionally, railway traffic control has been notified since the area is located next to a train station. “The steam is quite robust and occasionally blows onto the tracks with the wind. However, it is not expected to affect operations,” he added.

Once the water is shut off, excavation work will commence to locate and repair the leak. Savolainen assured that the immediate danger would be resolved within the hour.
