There has been a significant rise in boat thefts this year, particularly at the Natvigverven marina in Arendal, Norway. Criminals have been targeting both boats and electronic equipment, with thefts believed to occur during the day. So far this year, insurance companies have received reports of 904 boat thefts, up from 617 during the same period last year. The fall season marks a peak time for these occurrences, as boats are frequently left more accessible and inadequately secured while being prepared for storage.

Marinas situated along main thoroughfares like E 6 and E 18 are particularly vulnerable to these thefts. Authorities are urging boat owners to lock and mark their vessels and to organize security measures in the marinas.

Local marina leader Rune Riiber Boye has noted an increase in thefts and attempted thefts in recent weeks. Stolen items include speedboats and day cruisers, as well as electronic devices such as chart plotters and VHF radios. Most thefts are believed to happen during daylight, as there is enhanced security on-site at night.

Police officer Jan Kevin Brunvoll highlighted that both local and foreign thieves are involved, with local criminals typically stealing boats for immediate use while international thieves often partake in organized crime.

Brunvoll recommends that boat owners secure their vessels with approved locks and keep a close eye on their boats, particularly as winter approaches. He noted that some stolen boats have been recovered, especially thanks to effective tracking efforts by police in countries like Poland, Romania, and Germany. Political representatives are also calling for intensified action against criminal networks operating in Norway.
