Lena Otterlei, a dental health secretary from Ålesund, is preparing for her annual holiday trip. As a single woman, she is used to traveling alone and has been doing so since her first solo trip on a Nile cruise in 2006.

Otterlei believes that it’s worth challenging herself and experiencing different things by traveling. She has explored various exotic destinations, including a cycling trip in Cuba, a road trip in Iceland, and a journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway through Mongolia to China.

She also enjoys her solitary travels, having had successful solo trips since her first one. Otterlei encourages other singles who wish to travel alone to take the leap. She thinks it’s an advantage to enjoy one’s own company but also notes that she has made new friends during her travels.

According to her experience, solo travel requires more concentration, planning, and attentiveness. However, it’s worth it because she is not dependent on others to explore and experience what she wants.

Otterlei shares some tips for solo traveling:

1. Determine what you want as there are various types of trips available both domestically and internationally.
2. Have the courage to try.
3. Consider group trips for the first few times, preferably with a small group, for a different atmosphere.
4. Choose small, intimate hotels to easily connect with other people, including staff.
5. Take steps that make you feel safe during the trip, such as having extra cash or staying in touch with loved ones.
6. Always choose a private room. Despite the extra cost, it allows you to retreat and have some alone time in the evening.
7. If you feel safe enough, try traveling entirely alone.

Veronica Blumenthal, a tourism researcher, believes that solo traveling is increasing in popularity. She points out that solo travel offers several advantages, such as easier travel during peak seasons.

Travel companies, such as TUI, have observed an increasing number of customers choosing to travel alone. Solo trips have increased by 30% over the last year.

Emma Heggdal Brevik (23), another solo traveler, shares her advice:

1. Push yourself to dare.
2. Find new ways to travel.
3. Actively use apps to find jobs or volunteer opportunities and connect with others.
4. Stay in hostels to easily meet other people.
5. Start with a short trip if you’re unsure.

Both Otterlei and Brevik are advocates for solo travel and encourage others to experience the joy and freedom it can offer.
