Dog chew safety concerns arise after Brazilian terrier Tico dies in Finland

A recent case in Finland has raised serious concerns about the safety of dog chew products after a Brazilian terrier named Tico died shortly after being given a Hau-Hau Champion duck chew roll. Marja-Liisa Vainionpää presented Tico with the chew on September 19, and within days, the dog exhibited severe symptoms and was euthanized at the veterinarian’s office the following Monday.

Reports have emerged from multiple dog owners who experienced similar issues with Hau-Hau Champion’s lightweight chew rolls, prompting the company to withdraw the products from sale in August. Symptoms reported include diarrhea, vomiting, and tremors. Tico initially received two rolls, but later exhibited distressing behavior and neurological symptoms, prompting Vainionpää to consult with veterinarians.

Despite attempts to alleviate Tico’s suffering, Vainionpää ultimately decided on euthanasia due to the dog’s unrelenting symptoms. She mentioned that medications provided no relief, and they were unable to afford advanced care. An autopsy is planned for Tico at the expense of the chew roll importer, Ruokavirasto.

Timo Pärssinen, CEO of the importer Prima Pet Premium, stated that there is currently no evidence linking the chew rolls to any fatalities, indicating that not all incidents may be reported to them, as they often occur privately between customers and veterinarians. Pärssinen assured that the company is monitoring the situation closely and would take necessary actions if laboratory results indicate a problem. Laboratory testing has been challenging, but further results are expected next week. Compensation considerations for affected dog owners will be addressed once all testing results become available.
