Basketball enthusiasm soars in Kauhajoki as supporters secure dedicated bus for season
The basketball enthusiasm in Kauhajoki has reached new heights this season. With the help of local partners, the Karhu Basket supporter group has secured a dedicated bus for the entire season. Fan manager Pertti Holma expressed skepticism about any similar initiative existing in Finland or other sports. “There has been a need for this as we’ve been traveling across Finland to support our team for years. Then a bold idea arose: what if we wrapped a bus in the fan club’s colors?” Holma explained.
The idea quickly received approval from the bus-owning company, Provion. “We’ve been working around the clock for the past two weeks to get it wrapped,” Holma noted. He emphasized that this is no ordinary bus. “It’s quite upscale—equipped with a kitchen, karaoke systems, gaming consoles, and more. Travel will be quite comfortable.”
However, one 35-seat bus will not suffice, as the Korisliiga season kicks off in Nokia today. A total of five buses will depart from Kauhajoki filled with supporters. “There were a few spots left this morning, but at least 277 people are set to travel. With additional transportation options, we’ll have quite a crowd in Nokia,” Holma mentioned.
Traveling with Karhu Basket supporters isn’t just a quiet ride; there’s always planned activities and shared fun during trips. “We don’t just scroll through our phones; that’s one of our secrets.”
The basketball craze in this small town has been fueled by a recent investment in facilities. The new arena opened two years ago, significantly increasing interest. Last season, Karhu Basket had the highest average attendance in the Korisliiga, with just over 1,750 spectators per game. Karhu Basket will also have the honor of being the first visiting team to inaugurate Nokia’s new arena. “Of course, the new and lovely facilities in Nokia motivate people to travel. When conditions are good, people will move,” Holma concluded.
