A fire at the popular Järvelä Ice Swimming Center in Littoinen, Southwest Finland, originated from an ash bucket stored outside the burned sauna building. The Southwest Finland Police have announced that they are investigating the incident as a public safety hazard, focusing on the events leading up to the fire and relevant safety protocols. The blaze broke out early Tuesday morning, September 24, when a passerby on a morning walk reported it to emergency services around 8 AM. Multiple fire department units were dispatched to the scene. The fire resulted in the destruction of two sauna buildings, while a third sustained damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The police and fire department are collaborating to determine the cause of the fire. In a statement, Chief Investigator Tuomas Järvenpää emphasized the need for caution in handling and storing ash, as it can smolder for an extended period.
