Turku is projected to experience rapid population growth over the next 15 years, according to a recent forecast shared by the city. The projection includes three scenarios for population development. The most optimistic scenario suggests that Turku’s population could increase by as much as 59,000 residents by 2040, while even the most moderate outlook estimates a growth of 40,000 inhabitants.

The forecast is based on assessments of the continuation of current population trends, birth rates, and immigration. The scenario predicting the highest growth is referred to as the “immigration scenario,” indicating that by 2040, Turku’s population could be nearly one-third (28.8 percent) larger than today.

Timo Aro, the director of research for Turku, asserts that there are valid reasons for expecting this population growth. He notes that key metrics related to Turku’s expansion and attractiveness have significantly improved in recent years. Although growth is not an end in itself, it tends to reinforce itself, Aro explained.

Turku’s population increase can be attributed to various factors, including the creation of 7,800 jobs and the establishment of approximately 3,400 new businesses, along with 2,800 incoming higher education students. Over the past five years, the city’s population has grown by 10,700 residents.

The forecast also indicates that the largest population increase will occur in the 25-34 and 35-60 age groups, which are considered optimal for the labor market. The city is also becoming increasingly international, with projections that by 2040 nearly one in four residents will be multilingual.

Additionally, significant construction and infrastructure projects are generating jobs, with improvements in labor availability anticipated. The development of the Satama-Varissuo tram line is expected to further enhance growth, with forecasts suggesting it could add between 18,000 and 20,000 residents by 2050. The amount of construction planned around the tram line is expected to far exceed that of bus alternatives.
