Turku projects significant population growth with new tramway proposal
The city of Turku has updated its estimates regarding the potential population growth that a planned tramway between Varissuo and the port could bring. According to the calculations released on Friday, the population of Turku is projected to increase by approximately 18,000 to 20,000 people by 2050. Previous estimates anticipated only about 5,000 additional residents. Turku Tramway Ltd. stated that the urban development impact of the tramway is comparable to that of other tram cities in Finland.
These new estimates are based on a population forecast for spring 2024 and will be refined as the tramway planning and other assessments progress. The earlier estimate relied on outdated information. The Ministry of Finance had deemed the Turku tram project unviable due to previous population forecasts, asserting that it wouldn’t generate sufficient population growth to justify its implementation. The ministry suggested that the tramway should result in a population increase of 10,000 to 15,000 residents by 2050.
Turku’s research director, Timo Aro, noted that the projection for population growth from the tramway relied on old data. The report indicates that population growth in Turku has accelerated in recent years, with the growth rate now double that of previous medium-term projections.
In addition, the impact of the tramway on the growth of the city has been evaluated based on assumptions of population effects, construction potential along the route, and comparisons to tram projects in other cities. The population in the urban area has also increased, with forecasts indicating this trend will continue into the 2020s and 2030s. Aro emphasized the tramway’s significant influence on regional development. Moreover, the updated population forecast suggests heightened construction activity along the tram route, particularly benefiting the Linnakaupunki and Tiedepuisto areas.
