The Pirkanmaa District Court has sentenced Jan Daniel Johannes Kauhanen, born in 1989, to a prison term for attempted murder. The sentence is set at 3 years and 8 months. Kauhanen will remain in custody.

The stabbing incident occurred outside the Ratina shopping center in July, where Kauhanen attacked the victim with a knife, inflicting life-threatening injuries that necessitated urgent medical treatment and surgery. Prior to the stabbing, Kauhanen and the victim, who were previously acquainted, had engaged in a dispute.

Several bystanders prevented Kauhanen from launching a further attack while emergency services were quickly summoned for the victim. In court, Kauhanen admitted to stabbing the victim but denied intending to kill him. However, the court deemed it an attempted murder since it was likely that death would result from his actions.

Kauhanen has a lengthy criminal history, with numerous previous convictions, including robbery, assault, aggravated drunken driving, serious assault, forgery, theft, fraud, drug offenses, and illegal threats. His first conviction dates back to 2006.

Additionally, the court ordered Kauhanen to pay the victim €8,600 in damages. The ruling can be appealed, and Kauhanen has expressed dissatisfaction with the entire verdict.
