A technical disruption in the baggage handling system at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport has affected the luggage of thousands of travelers. The issue began early this morning around 4 AM, leading to passenger checked baggage being stacked in the open departure hall. According to Jani Elasmaa, Deputy Director of Finavia, the conveyor belts at the check-in counters were not functioning, requiring bags to be piled up as they awaited further transport.

Due to the system failure, not all passengers’ luggage made it onto flights, with over 2,000 bags from Finnair’s morning flights left behind at the airport. Elasmaa estimates that delays in delivering luggage to destinations could last anywhere from a few hours to up to 24 hours. These delays will occur regardless of the destination, affecting all flights departing from Helsinki-Vantaa.

While there are currently no reports of luggage being lost or damaged due to the disruption, the airline remains primarily responsible for any missing items. Increased security measures were implemented at the airport during the morning chaos, with staff and private security monitoring the situation closely. Should any baggage go missing despite these precautions, Finavia has stated that they will investigate alongside authorities.

The cause of the technical glitch is still unknown, but the check-in process for baggage is now functioning normally. Elasmaa advises travelers to pack essential items in carry-on luggage rather than checking them in, including medications, passports, and keys.

For those affected by the baggage delays, Elasmaa recommends contacting the airline directly and checking with insurance providers for potential compensation for necessary purchases made due to the delays.
