Captain of freight ship Longdawn charged with endangerment after collision under influence of drugs and alcohol
The Captain of the freight ship, Longdawn, knowingly collided with the fishing boat Höddu HF while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Despite the ship’s helmsman believing the boat was sinking, the Captain continued the ship’s course.
The Captain and the helmsman of Longdawn put the life and health of the fishing boat’s Captain in clear danger by not assisting him when the freight ship hit the boat, causing it to sink. This is stated in the charges against the two men.
At the time of the collision, a hole was torn in the side and hull of the boat, causing it to capsize. The Captain of the fishing boat managed to get into a life raft and escape from the sinking boat. The Captain of another fishing boat, which was nearby, rescued him from the sea.
According to the charges, by leaving the man in the sea, the Captain and the helmsman of Longdawn put his life in clear danger. They are charged with endangerment and violation of life, body, and maritime laws.
The charge also states that the Captain was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, thus incapable of adequately performing his duties. It is demanded that both men be sentenced to punishment and payment of legal costs.
