Grindavík authorities enhance safety measures following fatal accident

In efforts to enhance safety in Grindavík, local authorities are addressing concerns raised by the Directorate of Labor Inspection following a fatal accident that occurred in January. Árna Þór Sigurðsson, chairman of the Grindavík Council, emphasized the community’s commitment to ensuring the highest level of safety possible.

“Everything is being done to make conditions in Grindavík as safe as they can be,” he stated, noting the importance of reflecting on recommendations from the inspection report regarding the accident. This autumn, the community plans to undertake various projects, including repairs, crack filling, and cordoning off hazardous or unexamined areas. Furthermore, detailed geological surveys have been conducted to assess the situation more comprehensively.

Sigurðsson acknowledged that the Grindavík Council was not established when the accident occurred. The Directorate’s report highlighted the absence of written risk assessments and pointed out critical shortcomings in project organization at the time of the crack filling work.

“We are committed to ensuring proper procedures and safety in the area,” Sigurðsson said, affirming the importance of addressing the report’s findings. “It is indeed important to take the recommendations in this report into serious consideration. We’re striving to draw up our plans so that everything is as safe as possible.”
