Heavy rain and wind warnings in effect for Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso, risk of urban flooding
Warnings have been issued today about heavy rain and brisk winds. Urban flooding is possible, with individual showers potentially delivering several millimeters of rain. The rain warning is in effect in Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso, with rainfall moving eastward. Saturday is expected to be beautifully clear and locally hot, with new rain arriving from the southwest on Sunday.
Foreca’s on-call meteorologist, Sara Salonen, says urban flooding could occur on Thursday. Even from individual showers, several millimeters of rain could fall at once. A rain warning is issued if more than a few tens of millimeters of water are expected. Especially now, as the rains are shower-like, the day’s rainfall can come in a very short time.
The rain warning is in effect in Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso, but the rain front will wet the whole of Finland as it progresses. The rains have already arrived in Uusimaa and will move from southern Finland towards the east during the afternoon and evening. Lapland could also see more than a few tens of millimeters of water.
The wind will intensify with the showers. Wind warnings have been issued to western Finland. Inland, the wind will blow moderately at 7 meters per second, with gusts possibly exceeding 15 meters per second.
On Friday, the rain will recede to the east. Isolated showers will also develop elsewhere in Finland during the day, but they will not be as severe as on Thursday.
On Saturday, the weather is set to be beautifully clear and locally hot. In the afternoon, showers may occur, but they will be isolated. On Sunday, new rains will arrive in Finland from the southwest. The rain front, however, is narrow and will not wet the entire country. Temperatures across the country will be around 20 degrees, even in Lapland.
