Hus announces closure of group home for ventilator-dependent patients in Rekola, Vantaa

A group home managed by HUS for patients reliant on ventilators will close next year, according to the organization. HUS has stated that it can no longer continue operations at its group home located in Rekola, Vantaa, as it is unable to provide or arrange social welfare services.

Starting January 1, 2025, services for patients living on ventilators will transition from healthcare to social welfare due to an upcoming reform of the Disability Services Act. After this change, HUS will only be responsible for the specialized medical care of these patients, with the exception of those suffering from respiratory paralysis.

Under the law concerning patient charges, individuals can choose when to transition to the new system within a three-year grace period, and all patients must shift to the new framework by January 1, 2028.

HUS has informed both staff and residents of the changes. The organization assures that the continuity of care at the Rekola unit will be maintained in collaboration with patients and social services. The goal of the reform is to enhance the autonomy and position of patients dependent on ventilators in relation to other disabled individuals. Residents of the Rekola group home specifically chose this living arrangement, and HUS is committed to considering their preferences regarding future housing options. Discussions will continue throughout the autumn with the social service providers responsible for the residents.

Changes to job roles and responsibilities for staff working at the group home will also occur, and consultations with staff will be held to address these changes.
