Violence reported in psychiatric ward c at regional psychiatry in randers

Violence and threats, followed by a dismissive attitude from management, have become commonplace for staff in the psychiatric ward C at the Regional Psychiatry in Randers, according to a report by the Danish Working Environment Authority. Instances of a harsh tone from leaders, slamming doors, and rolling eyes have contributed to a toxic work environment.

Concerns regarding the professional standards at this ward escalated following a whistleblower report, leading to the suspension of a chief physician in February. The Region of Central Jutland is currently reviewing the treatment records of 1,500 patients to determine if their care met proper standards.

The Working Environment Authority conducted multiple inspections throughout 2023 and issued an order in December, noting that 14 out of 28 staff reported experiencing abusive behavior from management or colleagues within the past six months. The report highlights issues such as aggressive communication, neglect, backbiting, and discrimination.

Professor Peter Hasle, an expert in workplace environment from the University of Southern Denmark, called the situation “serious.” He noted that while professional disagreements about managing dangerous patients can be constructive, the issues at ward C have resulted in harmful conflict and poor staff morale. Hasle emphasized that it took a long time for management to recognize the gravity of the situation.

In response to the findings, hospital management acknowledged that there were indeed episodes of language and behavior that employees perceived as abusive. They have since implemented several measures, including management supervision and thematic days for staff. Despite their acknowledgment of the issues, Hospital Director Tina Ebler emphasized that, although improvements are underway, they are not yet complete. She also remarked that prior concerns about patient safety arose only after the whistleblower report was received.
