Government aims to equalize pension rights for cohabiting and married pensioners in Sweden

The government intends to grant cohabiting pensioners the same rights as married pensioners.

Currently, when a married pensioner passes away, their surviving spouse—who is also a pensioner—maintains the right to the deceased’s pension for three months following the death. This right does not extend to cohabiting pensioners who are not married.

Historically, cohabiting pensioners have received their pensions as single individuals, resulting in higher incomes compared to their married counterparts. However, this will now change, leading to a reduction in the pensions received by cohabiting pensioners.

It is important to note that this change will not affect those who are already pensioners under the current system.

Overall, the adjustment aims to ensure that cohabiting pensioners receive the same rights as married pensioners regarding benefits after the death of a partner. The government claims that this equity will also lead to savings for the state.
