Suspicious object leads to closure of Stockholm Central Station; two arrested on suspicion of planning thermos bomb attack
A suspicious object was discovered around 5:45 pm at the northern hall of Stockholm Central Station, leading to its closure. The National Bomb Squad was called to the scene and took care of the object.
Two individuals, a 30-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, were arrested, according to Senior Prosecutor Carolina Frohm. They are suspected of crimes against the law on flammable and explosive goods, serious crimes, and preparation for severe public destruction. Reports suggest the suspects planned to deliver and detonate a thermos bomb in northern Sweden. The police also found a knife and narcotics on the individuals. They do not appear to be residents of Stockholm and reportedly have several previous criminal convictions.
The police gave no details on why these individuals were singled out for scrutiny and would not reveal their ages. The suspects were arrested, and the cordons were lifted around 7 pm. An investigation into the violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods has begun.
Tracks 3-7 were closed at the request of the police, while tracks 10-19 remained open for traffic. “This may result in some minor delays in traffic during the evening, as there were fewer available tracks,” said Ronny Hörstrand of SJ’s press office.
