In most municipalities, residents are seeking improved opportunities for settling down, but this is not the case in the Municipality of Sjóvar, where residents express high satisfaction with their housing options. This finding comes from a comprehensive community survey conducted by Kringvarp Føroyðar in connection with the municipal elections.
According to Artur Johansen, the mayor of Sjóvar, the satisfaction stems from timely developments. “Zoning for residential plots was completed before the Eysturoy Tunnel was opened, allowing the municipality to grow,” he explained.
Magnus Jørmundsson, a recent mover to Strondum, shares his positive experience regarding the availability of housing in Sjóvar. Originally from Fuglafjørður, he and his partner initially searched for homes there but found the options disappointing. “In Fuglafjørður, there was virtually nothing, and while there were many options in the capital, Tórshavn, the prices were exorbitantly high compared to our budget,” he said. They eventually decided to purchase a home in Strondum, where they found better options within their price range.
Jørmundsson believes that Sjóvar’s appeal is illustrated by its diverse incoming population and the fact that it is easy to settle in with suitable homes available. However, he notes that challenges remain, particularly with road and traffic conditions. Despite residents’ satisfaction with housing, 42% believe that infrastructure related to roads and pathways should be prioritized.
Overall, while Sjóvar enjoys a high level of resident contentment regarding housing, there is a clear call for improved traffic safety and road maintenance to support community growth.
