Today marks Efterskolernes Dag, offering interested parents and prospective students a chance to explore potential schools and ask questions. The government aims to enhance inclusivity by increasing the number of young people with special needs at these institutions.

David Kold, a 10th-grade student at Waldemarsbo Efterskole, shared how he has made significant progress since attending the special school that supports students with varying needs. In the upcoming budget proposal, the government plans for efterskoler to allocate more funding specifically for special education, directing 37.5 million kroner from their total budget towards this initiative.

According to Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye, the new funding model is designed to encourage efterskoler to accept more students with special needs. Currently, some efterskoler take on a social responsibility for these students, while others do less. Recent statistics show that half of the general efterskoler did not provide any special education.

Waldemarsbo Efterskole is one of several schools showcasing its offerings today. Kold expressed that the specialized support he receives has been crucial in his development, allowing him to tackle difficult subjects in a conducive environment.

Tine Engell Kjøller, the principal of Waldemarsbo, highlighted that the new funding will enable her school to enhance its special education offerings and improve individualized attention for students. She noted that over recent years, classes have become overcrowded, making it challenging to meet each student’s needs adequately.

Torben Vind Rasmussen, chair of the Efterskole Association, acknowledged the rising numbers of diagnosed students but lamented the lack of additional funding for efterskoler despite the increased responsibilities.

The proposed budget for 2025 aims to boost resources for special education not only in efterskoler but also in independent schools, redistributing funds to support these critical initiatives.
