Danish program highlights generational divide over pronoun use in gender identity discussions

Pronouns such as “he/him,” “she/her,” and “they/them” are increasingly appearing in Instagram profiles, allowing individuals to express how they wish to be addressed based on their gender identity. This trend highlights contemporary societal divisions, as seen in the recent DR program “Sofie and the New Times,” where host Sofie Diemer shares her pronouns. In contrast, her guest, Søren Espensen, a 71-year-old cultural and church spokesperson for the Denmark Democrats, who identifies as a “superboomer,” dismisses the practice of including pronouns, stating he would never resort to such a thing.

Diemer believes that sharing pronouns is a way to respect people’s identities and to normalize discussions about fluid gender identity. She argues that this approach can help older generations understand how they may be addressed, potentially reducing the discomfort of misgendering.

Espensen, who recently learned the term “boomer,” claims that not displaying pronouns does not diminish his respect for others. He argues that imposing labels only boxes individuals in, and he prefers not to categorize people.

The discourse on generational differences is explored by Diemer in her podcast “Sofie and the New Times,” where she emphasizes that conversations about pronouns should not feel compulsory but rather serve as a helpful informational tool. She suggests that discussions around gender identity must occur to combat the stigmas associated with them.

Branner, the Secretary General of LGBT+ Denmark, maintains there is no right or wrong way to engage in these conversations, advocating for flexibility given that different people have varying preferences. As society progresses, the normalization of these discussions is seen as essential to reducing stigma and fostering understanding.
