Þórður Snær Júlíusson joins Samfylkingin political party in Iceland
Þórður Snær Júlíusson has officially announced his membership in the Samfylkingin political party, marking his first venture into organized politics. In a statement shared on his Facebook page, he expressed that after considerable contemplation and numerous discussions, he believes the party aligns with his vision for just reforms in Iceland.
He highlighted that the recent leadership of Kristrún Frostadóttir has expanded the party’s scope, making it the appropriate force for advocating meaningful changes in the country. Þórður Snær, a former journalist and editor-in-chief of Heimildin, emphasized the importance of his new political engagement by stating that participating in structured party activities does not align with his previous role in analyzing economic issues on Morgunvaktin at Rás 1. As a result, he has informed the program’s management that he will discontinue his commentary on economics and society.
Despite this shift, Þórður Snær will continue to publish his newsletter, Kjarnyrt, maintaining its commitment to fair, well-researched, analytical, honest, and solution-focused reporting. He previously edited Kjarninn from its launch in 2013 until its merger with Stundin in 2022, which led to the establishment of Heimildin, where he worked until this summer.
His decision to join Samfylkingin signifies a significant personal and professional transformation for Þórður Snær as he aims to contribute to public discourse and political progress in Iceland.
