The Finnish Parliamentary Ombudsman, Petri Jääskeläinen, has emphasized the need to enhance the supervision and legislation related to the order aboard passenger vessels. In a statement, he highlighted concerns stemming from an inspection of the holding facilities on the passenger-car ferry M/S Baltic Princess, which took place in November 2022. This inspection marked the first of its kind on passenger ships.
Jääskeläinen identified numerous issues during the inspection, suggesting that these problems likely extend beyond just the evaluated vessel. One significant concern is that the police had not inspected or approved the ship’s holding facilities prior to their use, despite legal requirements mandating such actions.
The findings prompt a call for improved regulatory frameworks and enforcement to ensure safety and compliance on passenger ships in Finland.
