Coffee prices surge as climate change threatens global production: could dandelion roots be the future?

The price of brewing coffee increased by 7.9 percent in June alone. A packet of brewing coffee now costs between 5 and 11 kronor more than just a month ago. In addition, climate change threatens to wipe out large parts of the world’s coffee production in the future.

In difficult times such as during wars, various coffee substitutes have been used, including roasted grains and the chicory plant. The question is what could be the “coffee” of the future. In Västerås, Johannes Wätterbäck, who runs the cultivation blog Farbror Grön, has experimented with making it from dandelion roots.

“I think it’s incredibly tasty,” he says.

However, the rising cost of coffee is a concern for many. This trend could make this beloved beverage even more expensive in the future. Over the past nearly three years, high inflation has caused food prices to soar. The increase in coffee prices is just one example of how this inflation is affecting everyday commodities.

As we face issues such as these, it’s more important than ever to consider future-oriented questions. Among them, how climate change could potentially devastate the world’s coffee production. As this happens, we may need to look to alternative sources for our beloved coffee, such as the dandelion root coffee being experimented with in Västerås.

As the world continues to grapple with these economic and environmental challenges, the quest for the future’s “coffee” continues. Whether it’s dandelion root or another substitute, it’s clear that our morning brew may look very different in the years to come.
