As autumn approaches and leaves begin to fall, 12 retirees and three municipal staff members boarded a flight at Copenhagen Airport on Thursday morning, headed for a week-long holiday in sunny Málaga, Spain. The trip, funded by Copenhagen Municipality, aims to reduce loneliness among the elderly, according to Jens-Kristian Lütken, the city’s employment and integration mayor, who conceived the initiative.

Lütken emphasizes that many seniors face isolation, which can lead to increased care needs. He believes this welfare trip can help mitigate those needs and delay potential moves to nursing homes. However, Lone Skov Al Awssi, a member of the Copenhagen Senior Council, argues against this expenditure, citing recent cuts in home care services for seniors and rising food prices at nursing homes.

Copenhagen is not the first municipality to sponsor such travel for retirees; the practice recalls a controversial program initiated by the former mayor of Farum, Peter Brixtofte, who organized trips for seniors to destinations like Gran Canaria in the early 2000s. These excursions, while beneficial in fostering social networks among elder participants, became part of misuse allegations against Brixtofte.

Birger Nielsen, a 79-year-old retiree participating in the trip, looks forward to the experience, expressing his concern over traveling alone after losing his spouse. Despite criticism, he views the initiative positively, noting the need for social interaction among seniors.

Copenhagen Municipality has allocated 1.4 million kroner this year and again next year for a series of eight senior trips. While Skov Al Awssi suggests funds could be better spent on enhancing social activities for seniors locally, Lütken insists innovative solutions are necessary given the increasing elderly population and staffing shortages.
