The war in Ukraine has highlighted the importance of air defense systems, according to military science researcher Oscar Jonsson, who states that “air defense is what keeps Ukraine alive today.” Before the war, Ukraine was noted to have one of the most robust air defense systems in Europe. In contrast, Sweden and many other NATO countries face different circumstances.

An expert has estimated the coverage area of Sweden’s current air defense, suggesting it protects only about five percent of the country, roughly equivalent to the size of Västernorrland County. The Green Party in Sweden advocates for an increase in air defense capabilities, asserting that the current systems are inadequate to protect the civilian population and critical infrastructure. Emma Berginger, a member of the Riksdag for the Green Party, points out that the existing air defense lacks the capacity needed for comprehensive protection.

However, other political parties disagree. Jörgen Berglund, the new chairman of the Defense Committee, argues that it is not feasible simply to acquire more air defense systems without proper maintenance and trained personnel, which Sweden currently lacks. He emphasizes that increasing air defense capabilities requires broader resources.

A new defense decision is set to be made by the Riksdag in December, outlining Sweden’s defense strategy for the next five years, including planned procurements. Citizens need reliable information to assess the performance of their elected officials, particularly on the number and range of air defense units, which should not remain a secret. The existing information reported is only approximate.
