Vandals cut down 31 street trees in Odder, Denmark, prompting police investigation

Last Friday, 31 street trees lined Houvej in Odder. However, over the weekend, unknown individuals illegally cut down these large trees, which ranged in diameter from 25 centimeters to one meter. The trees were subsequently removed from the site.

Helle Bøhl-Møller, head of the Technical & Environmental Department in Odder Municipality, expressed shock, stating it was hard to comprehend how someone could think it was acceptable to remove such beautiful trees from a key entry point into the town. She emphasized her dismay at the act, calling it surreal.

Odder Municipality has reported the incident as vandalism and theft to the East Jutland Police, who are now investigating. If the perpetrators are found, they could face significant financial repercussions.

Bøhl-Møller noted that the value of the timber from the 31 trees is considerable, whether sold as firewood or chips. One tree, measuring a meter in diameter and approximately 25 meters tall, represents a substantial volume of wood.

While she refrained from speculating on the motivations behind this act, Bøhl-Møller found it difficult to understand the mindset of those responsible. She stressed the importance of restoring the trees, highlighting the ongoing discussions within the community about replanting efforts.

Bøhl-Møller remarked that it is essential for society to recognize the intrinsic value of trees and green spaces, especially as the community seeks to enhance its environment. The loss of these trees complicates their replanting initiatives and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting local natural resources.
