Faroese ferry operator Strandferðslan is refusing to pay cargo fees to Klaksvik Municipality, which says the unpaid charges exceed 600,000 kroner for 2025 and so far in 2026, public broadcaster KVF reports.
The fees relate to the route across the Kalsoy fjord, operated by the ferry Sam. Klaksvik Mayor Karl Johansen says the charges apply to trailers, lorries and goods vans, transport equipment, cars and passengers.
Torshavn Harbour has had a written agreement with Strandferðslan on cargo fees since 2024. Klaksvik Municipality has only had a verbal agreement, but says it has invoiced the operator using the same approach as Torshavn Harbour, for 2025 and 2026.
Strandferðslan director Dánjal Samuelsen says it is time to consider whether the operator should pay cargo fees when moving goods between harbour facilities within the same municipality.
