The leadership of the Satakunta welfare region plans to propose increases in customer fees for the coming year, as revealed during a regional council meeting on Monday. This decision is driven by the welfare area’s financial situation, which is projected to incur a deficit of over 87 million euros this year. Costs have risen significantly, particularly due to increasing prices for purchased services.
Additionally, cuts to personnel are expected. Kirsi Varhiala, the director of the welfare region, mentioned during the council meeting that such proposals are not made lightly. “This certainly means more personnel negotiations. We have no other options,” Varhiala stated.
In the personnel negotiations that concluded this summer, it was concluded that a maximum of 35 individuals would be laid off, with over a thousand facing temporary layoffs. Varhiala also highlighted specific areas where service costs in Satakunta exceed those in other parts of Finland. These aspects are being assessed as a basis for future savings.
For instance, in residential services for individuals with disabilities, Satakunta has 300 individuals per 100,000 inhabitants, which is three times the national average. The welfare region is actively seeking strategies to address its financial challenges while ensuring essential services are maintained.
