Helsinki inspects Arctic trams after brake issue identified

Helsinki’s Urban Transport Company has announced plans to inspect its fleet of Arctic trams after identifying a potential issue with the track brakes on Tuesday evening. As a result, tram services in central Helsinki will be limited on Wednesday due to a shortage of available trams.

According to the statement, the irregularity detected in the brake system could theoretically disrupt transit services; however, there is no immediate danger to passenger safety. “The Urban Transport Company aims to ensure safety by checking the fastening of the brake shoes on all trams of that type,” stated Heidi Heikkilä, Head of Fleet Services.

Should any irregularities be found during the inspection, the affected trams will be temporarily removed from service for repairs. Heikkilä apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers but stressed the company’s commitment to prioritizing safety over anything else.

The inspections are expected to be completed within 24 hours.
