Recent decrease observed in eruption intensity at Sundhnúks craters in Iceland

In recent days, there has been a notable decrease in the intensity of the eruption at the Sundhnúks craters, with neither land uplift nor subsidence observed in the Svartsengi area. This suggests that the inflow of magma into the reservoir beneath Svartsengi is comparable to the flow from the ongoing eruption. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has reported that it will take a few days of monitoring to determine if land uplift has resumed definitively, as various changes, such as humidity levels in the atmosphere and solar storms, can affect measurements.

Currently, two fissures remain active in the eruption that began in August. The lava field to the north of the fissures continues to grow, although the rate of its spread has slowed. At present, the lava flow does not pose a threat to the infrastructure surrounding the eruption sites. A new risk assessment is expected later today.
