Seismic activity raises concerns about volcanic pollution in southwest Iceland
Recent seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula has raised concerns about volcanic pollution in the southwest region of Iceland. However, the volcanic ash emissions are reportedly diminishing as the day progresses. Current data indicate that pollution levels from the eruption at Stóra-Skógfell are primarily affecting the area around Vogar, but measurements taken around 7 AM show low particulate matter levels.
According to air quality monitors from the Environmental Agency, air quality remains very good at this time. Forecast models from the Icelandic Meteorological Office suggest that pollution may be detected across various areas of the southwestern peninsula earlier in the day. However, conditions are expected to change in the afternoon as the wind shifts southeastward, which will help disperse any remaining pollution out to sea.
The evolution of particulate matter measurements in Vogar over the last 24 hours is available for review.
