Power has been restored in Vík, a village in the Mýrdalur region, after widespread outages last night due to a failure in the electrical system. The outage affected the entire area, with electricity being down for an extended period.

Technicians were able to identify the issue, which was traced to a cable fault in the Jökulsá river on Sólheimasandur. According to Gísli Þór Ólafsson, the head of system management at Rarik, the fault has been challenging to address.

By early morning, power had been restored to all residents in Vík, and additional backup power was secured, suggesting that electricity would soon be available to more areas in Mýrdalur. Gísli stated, “We will see how far we can progress with the available power.”

The power outage may have disrupted telecommunications in the area as well. Reports indicated that some residents were experiencing issues with phone service, likely due to the overload on telecommunications systems, which often shift to mobile networks during such failures.

Overall, the situation is improving, and efforts are ongoing to fully restore services to the affected regions.
