Laila-Beate Thomassen-Paulsen recently endured a long train journey in Norway, where two out of three toilets were closed, leaving passengers without access during the trip. The remaining toilet ran out of water, leading to a difficult situation for many travelers, especially those traveling with children or those with medical needs such as Thomassen-Paulsen, who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome.

Thomassen-Paulsen described the scene when the train finally stopped in Trondheim: passengers rushed to the toilet, reminiscent of cows being released from a barn after winter. She was shocked to hear the announcement about the toilet closures shortly after departing, expressing concern about how the packed train would manage without facilities.

Mads Johansson, Secretary General of the Norwegian Gastrointestinal Association, stated that the closures are illegal, referencing a previous ruling that deemed similar practices by a bus company unlawful. He emphasized that the lack of toilet access is a pressing problem affecting many, particularly those with digestive issues, and called for more stringent regulations to ensure facilities are available.

Train companies Vy and SJ Nord acknowledged the frustration and confirmed that simultaneous toilet closures are rare. Vy added they are making adjustments to enhance capacity in response to these issues. However, Johansson insists more awareness is needed, stressing that access to toilets should be treated as a basic human right, akin to food and water availability on trains. He believes society should not accept restrictions on essential facilities like toilets.
