The Finnish Accident Investigation Center, Otkes, has initiated an investigation into the partial collapse of an apartment building’s wall in Kontula, Helsinki, which occurred on July 30. A large section of the building’s façade fell down. The collapsed part was an external thermal plaster applied on a concrete wall, consisting of insulation material and an outer layer of plaster.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, although it was noted that the wall fell in an area where residents often gather. The day after the incident, Otkes commenced a site investigation and has now appointed a team to carry out the analysis.

According to Otkes, the investigation will focus on whether there are specific considerations regarding the thick insulation plaster in terms of its lifespan or maintenance practices. Additionally, the investigation will examine the construction processes of the façade method used and other factors that might impact the structure’s integrity.

“There are many different types of plastered surfaces. The collapse of the plastering in the investigated apartment building does not imply that the same issues apply to all plastered walls,” emphasized Timo Naskali, head of the investigation team, in a statement from Otkes.

Investigations by the Accident Investigation Center generally take between six months to a year to complete.
