Kristian Brujordet, the manager of Egon restaurant in Tromsø, expressed his gratitude after receiving the “Tabu Prize,” an honor presented by the Council for Mental Health. The award recognizes individuals or organizations that work to challenge stigmas, promote inclusion, and enhance awareness about mental health issues.
Brujordet was nominated by Emil C. Fredshammer, one of the restaurant’s regular patrons, who highlighted Brujordet’s role in creating a community space that extends beyond just dining. Fredshammer noted that Brujordet’s inclusive attitude and kindness have fostered connections among regular guests, affectionately referred to as “the guys.”
For the past eight years, this award has acknowledged significant contributions to mental health awareness, with previous recipients including the NRK program “Meg mot meg.” Fredshammer stated that Brujordet’s efforts have profoundly impacted the lives of many, as he often shares holiday greetings and gifts, ensuring everyone feels valued and included.
Tove Gundersen, Secretary General of the Council for Mental Health, praised Brujordet for his dedication to fostering belonging and support within the community. She emphasized that individuals who create inclusive environments can significantly influence the mental well-being of others.
Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre also expressed admiration, noting the importance of community and belonging in mental health. He commended Brujordet for cultivating a space that invites generosity and connection. The recognition and discussion surrounding Brujordet’s work highlight the broader need for mental health support services, especially as concerns grow regarding the increasing challenges faced by young people in this area.
