The Green League aims to topple Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government this fall, as stated by party chair Sofia Virta during her speech today. The party’s parliamentary group is meeting in Lappeenranta today and tomorrow. According to Virta, Orpo’s administration has consistently lacked a vision for making Finland a “better, safer, and more opportunity-filled place to live for everyone.”

Instead, she claims the government has been preoccupied with mishandling racial issues and engaged in meaningless social media antics. “This is hardly what voters ordered,” she remarked in her summer address.

Virta criticized the government’s approach to various issues including employment, immigration, and security policy. She argued that cuts to integration, organizational work, and social security will exacerbate the problems of street violence and gang activity. The decision to cut services for victims of domestic violence and redirect support to “questionable” male organizations has been linked by her to a rise in far-right misogyny in Finland.

Virta described the government’s natural and climate policies as “historically poor,” citing only the passage of a restoration regulation as a positive environmental measure. This law mandates the restoration of degraded natural habitats in Finland within a target timeline of 5–15 years.

She also highlighted ongoing investigations into environmental crimes related to the destruction of protected areas.

Furthermore, Virta indicated that the Green League plans to propose solutions to the crises in social services and emergency response in a forthcoming health policy program. She expressed particular concern for children and youth facing violence and sexual harassment, announcing plans to submit a bill aimed at recognizing the victim status of children in domestic violence situations.
