Electric vehicles in Trondheim have recently lost the right to use dedicated bus lanes, a change that has led to confusion among drivers. On Wednesday, several residents were fined, resulting in 25 recorded violations. Some individuals who received fines of 8,200 Norwegian kroner disputed them, claiming that the new signage is easily misunderstood.
Discussions around the clarity of the new signs have emerged in local media and on platforms like Reddit. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) has received numerous inquiries regarding the complexity of the signage and is considering changing its meaning. If these proposed changes go through, electric vehicles will no longer receive preferential treatment in bus lanes unless specifically determined by individual municipalities.
This summer, it was decided that electric vehicles would no longer have access to bus lanes in Trondheim. Following a delay, the signage has now been put in place. However, it seems many in Trondheim are still unclear about the new regulations, as a significant number of drivers were fined for violations.
The police district leader noted that enforcement was limited due to resource constraints. While some drivers argued that the signs were ambiguous, police admitted that the wording could be improved, although they believed the message—that electric vehicles should leave the bus lanes—was generally understood.
The Roads Administration agrees that the current text may be misleading and has suggested modifications. Currently, a range of vehicles, including electric cars, can utilize bus lanes to encourage their adoption. A shift in policy would mean that electric vehicles would no longer have this privilege unless a municipality opts to allow it.
