Earthquake of 3.4 magnitude strikes near Kleifarvatn in Iceland

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake occurred approximately two kilometers east of Kleifarvatn just before midnight. This tremor is classified as a normal fault earthquake, typical for this well-known seismic zone, according to a natural hazard specialist. Aftershocks are expected as the seismic activity continues; however, these tremors are not related to the volcanic activity at Sundhnúks crater. Several reports have been received indicating that the earthquake was felt in nearby communities. Observations made at the meteorological office confirmed that the quake was noticeably felt there as well.
