Greenstat has commenced the construction of a new hydrogen facility in Fiskå, Kristiansand, aiming to produce eight tons of hydrogen daily. The facility, set to be fully operational by December 2026, will generate hydrogen intended to serve as a fuel alternative to gasoline, diesel, and heavy oil, crucial for achieving zero emissions in the transport sector.
The primary customers for this hydrogen will be large ships transporting goods over considerable distances. Kristiansand’s Mayor, Mathias Bernander, considers the project a significant milestone in the hydrogen initiative and essential for both the industrial and maritime sectors. The site is located in a residential area, but project leader Torstein Thorsen Ekern assures residents that safety measures are in place to keep them out of any potential risk zones in case of an incident.
Ekern highlighted that an operational 20-megawatt plant producing eight tons of hydrogen daily could supply several container ships along Norway’s coastline and in the North Sea area. With existing battery solutions for smaller vehicles and boats, he emphasized that hydrogen is vital for large vessels that require substantial fuel capacity, making Fiskå an ideal location for this facility.
Mayor Bernander expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance for the local industry and maritime tradition. Kristiansand’s strategic position along the Norwegian coast and its potential as a renewable fuel bunkering hub could play a crucial role in regional development.
Residents have been informed about the project, and Ekern noted that discussions have taken place to address safety concerns, ensuring that risk areas are confined to the industrial site itself.
