In the past, Norway’s king would wield a sword to command attention. In 2024, the royal family finds itself under scrutiny for issues such as “body violations,” drug use, and a fascination with angels. While the future queen reaches out to victims, her son, who faces violence charges, cites mental health struggles and substance abuse. Meanwhile, royalists stand on the sidelines, flags in hand, understanding the turmoil all too well.

As a nation, we must confront a harsh reality. A comeback politician now asserts, perhaps rightly, that Norwegian leaders have long nurtured problems and vulnerable communities. Each night, a handful of troubled youths roam the streets with knives, drugs, and explosives. Where are we heading, and where is the will to solve these issues? Where are the responsible parties – politicians, law enforcement, and the moral compass of our society?

Everything continues unchanged, even as social problems multiply, and budgets balloon. Support systems expand for over 100,000 Norwegian youth unable or unwilling to work, and for those on temporary sick leave. Norway, the world’s richest nation, is also one of the most expensive to maintain, nearly double the cost of neighboring Finland.

Our lives are filled with excess – from binge-watching television to enjoying pizza, while we complain about inflation. Yet, the need for more grows as productivity declines and the aging population increases.

The upcoming royal wedding will undoubtedly ignite media frenzy, overshadowing critical societal issues. As capitalism faces challenges and the government proposes yet another reform, we are consumed by our own indulgences and shortcomings. The realities are stark, and we remain trapped in a cycle of neglect, denial, and excess.
