Learning to drive can be challenging for both novice drivers and their instructors. In response, some driving schools in Norway have begun hosting parent meetings to help families better navigate the practice driving experience, an initiative supported by the Norwegian Traffic School Association.

Driving instructor Geir Cato Kristiansen advises parents to focus on one task at a time, provide positive feedback, avoid criticism during driving, and have a clear plan before hitting the road. He also offers courses designed to boost parents’ confidence in teaching their children to drive. Many parents reportedly feel uncertain about traffic rules, especially those pertaining to roundabouts.

Through practice driving, both parents and teens can grow; parents often become calmer while teens gain confidence behind the wheel. Kristiansen emphasizes the importance of patience, stating that some parents expect their children to drive without adequate guidance. Learning the complexities of changing lanes and navigating roundabouts can be overwhelming for new drivers.

While parents often experience anxiety during driving lessons, like Helene Bergheim, 17, who is preparing to obtain her license, the process can lead to newfound serenity and skills. “At the start, it was nerve-wracking, especially in roundabouts, but now I feel secure,” she explains.

Kristiansen highlights the need for support, underscoring that trained parents can positively influence their children’s driving experience. His courses facilitate this by providing essential information and creating a reassuring atmosphere for both parties. Additionally, a free information session is available for all parents of teenagers learning to drive, reinforcing the collaboration between driving schools and families.
