Hotel guests at several Danish hotels have received fake WhatsApp messages asking for their payment card details after a data leak at a reservation software provider, DR reports.

Hotel Koldingfjord said in a Facebook post that it does not use WhatsApp to communicate with guests, and that the messages are fraudulent.

The hotel’s director, Peder Madsen, said one guest apparently entered a credit card number but did not proceed to the MitID stage. The hotel advised the guest to contact their bank and card provider.

About 25 other guests have contacted the hotel to ask about the messages, Madsen said.

TV Syd reports that four other hotels in southern Jutland have experienced similar incidents. The company that supplies the reservation system said on its service status page that it was working on the issue. The leak was recorded on Saturday afternoon.

Madsen said the hotel was in close contact with the supplier, which was working to determine what happened and prevent a similar incident in future.
